Sometimes it just works!
People are ever hopeful that just one word from me can solve their animal behavior problem. Usually they will have to do some of the job too and it might take a bit of time, but sometimes it just works. That is what happened when a client recently called about a mare who was about to foal. The mare was anxious and would not settle and they had to transport her to a birthing facility. The client wanted me to talk to her, explain everything and calm her down. I gave my usual disclaimers: you can talk to her too and she will get it, I can’t guarantee it will work, etc. Then immediately after I talked to the horse, the mare calmed down and was easy to move to where she was going to give birth.
The birth was difficult and the mare and the baby went through various stages of anxiety, but each time, just me tuning in and talking helped. The biggest stress was that the baby had to have an operation for a hernia. That trauma too seemed to be helped along by my talks. At last report mom and baby were back home and doing well. I am over the moon.
