And I thought they would be so fun to have and easy to take care of. I had no idea. First I couldn’t get them to eat. Then they wouldn’t come off the nests, not to drink, eat, nothing. I’d take one off the nest and her legs would be so numb she couldn’t stand. Then I got two new ones and there was war. Then I found out they can get parasites and mites and all kinds of bad things. I think we have it all worked out now… one vet, two chat groups, two friends with chickens, and one friend who knows everything about animals later, but chickens, easy? I’d be the last to agree on that one!

I’ll get some pictures of them for next blog.

GOAT PRACTICE

A reader, Dianne, thought people who read this blog might like to practice communicating with her goat,  Giacomo (Jockamo). He is estimated to be 15.  Here is his picture.

Giacomo

Giacomo

You can ask him his favorite treats, best friend (besides Dianne), where he likes to be patted, how he is with kids,  where he was before, and how he came to be with Dianne. Send in your impressions and next blog I will tell you what I know and Dianne can respond to any other info you get. If you would like to have people practice with one of your animals, send me an email with the details and some verifiables.

    Hi Marta
if you need some Reiki for the chickens- just tell me.
By the way how does Norman like the chickens?
    Cheers

    Hi, Marta,
I’ve always wanted chickens, always, but after reading about your experience, I will definitely do some studying up before I get them! I was under the impression that they were very, very simple to keep. 🙂

Here goes, favorite treat, cut up carrotts, his best friend is a draft horse (could his name be Willy?), he likes to be patted on the nose (soft part), he doesn’t care much for kids and he came from a petting zoo/carnival or something like that when they closed or were shut down. Did he come through and auction of some kind?
Very handsome goat by the way…

    Hi Marta,
Giacomo is giving me the following impression:
Chocolate and sugar cube are his favorite treats(sweet tooth???), rabbits are his best friends(black and white ones and name starting with M), loves the pat under his chin and kids are OK but must be careful not to be in trouble with them.
Was he at the animal shelter? His goat mother was in troble and Giacomo had to be removed.
I am getting the strong feeling that it is him who selected Dianne to be his family member not the other way around. He seems to be a funny goat who does not think he is a goat, perhaps because he has always been with human company.
Does he like to play in the mud and get dirty?
Generally, I think he is playful fun loving and likes to make people laugh.

Chris and Midori, if you want to email me, I have some further questions for you about what you picked up on Giacomo. Just put “goat” in the subject line, thanks!

    Giacomo.
Well, I got that he likes being rubbed quite hard right between his horns, likes carrots and apples and something acidic, oranges, even lemons? Pineapple popped into my head too. strange! I got that he really doesn’t like kids (the human sort), absolutely had enough of them, some hurt him and made fun of him, thought nothing of him or his feelings, neither did his handler. Think that is how he met Diane, I got a whole crazy story about being in a petting zoo, Diane visiting with some children, is she a teacher?, and him behaving very badly to the children she brought, bringing him to her attention. The word halal came into my head also, was the owner threatening to sell him for meat? Anyway, got the idea that he was waiting for Diane, recognized her and asked very clearly for her to take him away. So happy that she did. What a clever goat to find her!

Speaking of chickens, I saw this posted on boingboing today:

Also, My Pet Chicken has a great “Cash for Cluckers” sale. They’ll send you 25 chicks (all hens) for $41.50 with free shipping. That’s a great deal, because the regular price is $100.

I had a pet rooster Herman, who was bound for the cooking pot when I got him. He had turned very agressive. I started clicker training him and was blown away by how smart he was. He learned tricks quicker than most dogs and loved learning them. He came to his name, jumped up or down to a hand signal, crowed on cue to the word “think”, sat on my wrist like a falcon,( tho he was quite heavy) learned to fetch but most importantly stopped attacking. He learned most tricks in 2 days but would only do them for grapes. My friend betsy will agree chickens aren’t easy but they are interesting highly intelligent beings. They’ve even been taught to adjust a thermostat in a hen house. and they know what they are doing.

    Giacomo.
I got that Giacomo has a strong personality, he is curious, stubborn, but at the same time he is really fond to be part of the family. He lives with 3 kids and he feels one of them. He follow them in their games. He does not like his tail to be pulled and if they approach from behind he will run away, but hanging around to see what they do.

    Where he was before:
I saw an image of him with a rope around his neck. He said he lost his best years there. Did not have much space.
He was rescued. Dianne paid some money to get him and he is very grateful because of this.

He likes to be groomed under his chin and patted on his forehead. he prefer people to stand on his side and not in front of him.

His favourite treats are: apples, pears, lattuce and tomatoes.
    He loves fresh grassy pad.

He had a request and asked “could I have some himalayan pink salt, please ?” … may be he is asking me because he knows I am using it ??!?!?!?

Thanks he was nice meeting him (!)

On Giacomo. It’s wild because I got some of the same communication as on of your other viewers. I got that he liked to be rubbed about his ear. He likes carrots. Have you tried raw carrots with him? If you haven’t, maybe try? I’m getting this. I too got the petting zoo or farm. I wanted to email my communication but so busy lately. He likes to be called Jock. Is there a cat on your property? He likes the cat. There may be more than one cat but one in particular. I also got that this farm etc.. closed down. He is very forward in personality.

  11. Dianne

Hi, Phyllis. He won’t eat carrots, I have tried those. There are about 35 cats on the property, many of them visit in that paddock, he may like one of them. Farm is still open.

  12. Phyllis

When you tried the carrots, did they have the busy green leafy part?.I guess it may be called the stock.

  13. Dianne

    No, they didn’t.

Jock comes thru wanting companionship of his own kind too. Very insistent on another goat but not male. He wants a female goat. He says to tell you it will make him very happy. He loves the attention from you & others but just really missing this.
